Unconventional resume tips – part 1

I see WAY too many boring black and white resumes for engineers, product managers, consultants, etc. As a Senior Product Manager, I scored jobs in big tech and interviews at Google, Meta, Amazon, Reddit, Roblox, etc. by having a ~unique~ resume. Most recruiters mentioned they “loved my resume.” You want to standout from thousands of applicants, RIGHT!? Start with a dope resume.

This is going to be a series so here’s part 1: designing your resume.

You need a cool resume, so use a Canva template. I like this one BUT customize it:

• Update the colors:

  • For the left column: I personally use a light blueish gray

  • For the right column: I use a very light tan

  • For line breaks or timelines: Use the opposite color (e.g. very light tan on the blueish gray side)

• Update the section names:

  • For the right column: “Work Experience” and “Education”

  • For the left column: “Honors & Certifications”, “Skills & Interests”, and “Leadership Experience”

• Choose a readable but modern font:

  • I like Avenir but Lato works too

• Maintain font size and weight consistency for readability:

  • For example, I use Avenir size 10, bold for headers (e.g. Work Experience)

  • For company names (e.g. Netflix): I use Avenir size 10, semi-bold

  • For job titles (e.g Senior Product Manager), I use Avenir size 10, regular, in all caps… Change up the font size or adjust however you want. Just keep it consistent!

• Ensure everything is perfectly aligned. Hold down the option key to see the pixels between elements to check and double check

• Obvi keep to 1 page

• Margins should be no less than 0.6px

• Lastly, how do I put this delicately? 😅 Add a picture if you’re above average looking and make sure it’s a professional headshot

Freeze by Co – 3 women cofounders 🙌

Lauren Makler, Halle Tecco, and Arielle Spiegel are the powerhouse founders behind Freeze by Co, which is part of Cofertility. Freeze by Co offers women an opp to freeze their eggs for free (!!) when they donate half of the retrieved eggs to a family that can’t otherwise conceive. The cost of the process and 10 years of cryopreservation is fully covered.

These founders believe egg freezing is key for gender equality and reproductive choice, a stance backed by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (and also supported by me 😜). They get that egg freezing and donation are complex – they stress that every woman should have the chance to make informed choices about fertility 💯.
