Job hopping vs sticking around

Happy New Year, friends! Who else died going back to work on Tuesday? 💀
If you like this newsletter (or secretly love me 😇), send it to your people, or drop it in your fave Discord server, subreddit, Slack channel, etc. – any support means A LOT!
GETTING AHEAD
Job hopping vs sticking around
Are you getting a 10% pay increase every year? If not, it’s time to consider jumping ship.
According to Pew Research, recent job-switchers saw their pay rise by 9.7% or more from the previous year. Conversely, those who stayed in the same job experienced a median pay decrease of 1.7%. Basically, employers are greedy AF, and not increasing yearly wages to match inflation and the cost of living.
“But my job is stable, so why would I leave?”
Ultimately, it depends on what matters to YOU. I suggest assessing whether it’s worth staying:
Are you fairly compensated for your role AND living location?
Do you have an upcoming opportunity in 1-3 years to promote?
Do you actually like working there (i.e. do you care about the company’s mission, do you like the peeps you work with, how’s your work/life balance)?
If you’re still feeling positive then yeah, maybe you should stick around. If not, keep reading.
“Hmm, maybe I should leave my current gig. Tell me more.”
Job hopping is an art. You gotta ensure you’re making the right move. I like to think through these Qs when considering a new opp:
Does this new role align with my long-term career plans? (e.g. is it a promo? Is it something new I want to try?)
Is it a compensation bump of 10-30%?
What are current employees saying online? (Check Blind, Glassdoor, and Reddit to dig into potential layoffs, work-life balance, company outlook, etc.)

Me, driven only by money. JK, work-life balance is cool too.
Now it’s time to start applying 😎. Stay tuned for future newsletters where I dive into my not-so-standard resume tips that landed me interviews at Google, Meta, Amazon, Snapchat, Reddit, Lyft, and more!

Melanie Perkins – Canva’s billionaire CEO 🤑
Even 100+ VC rejections couldn’t stop Perkins – Canva has grown to 125 million users in 190 countries. DAMN. Based in Sydney, Perkins has developed a design platform that competes with Adobe and Microsoft. Canva aims to be among the world's most valuable companies while also being a force for good. It provides its visual collaboration and communication service for free to the majority of the education market, and offers its design tools to nonprofit organizations at no charge, aligning with its commitment to social impact. 👏
Today, Canva is worth a casual $40 billion, and Perkins’ personal net worth comes in at a cool $3.6 billion. Three cheers for this woman of color absolutely killing it.
PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS
It’s time to wake up ⏰
Ugh, there is NOTHING worse than hearing your morning alarm, but I wanted to give you my fave minimal effort tips to help you get the heck out of bed:
Keep a water bottle next to your bed and chug 12 ounces as soon as you wake up (hydration = less fatigue).
Immediately do 10-30 squats or push ups, whatever works. Getting your heart rate up will clear your mind, improve circulation, strengthen your muscles, and increase blood flow, waking you the eff up. Also, you won’t get sweaty from this light 1-minute workout, so it’s kinda perfect.
FRESH DRIPS
I’m a sucker for a set
Literally obsessed with this matching shirt and pants sweater set. It’s so ideal for wfh or weekend errands.
Freya sweater set (color: ashblown combo… weird color name 😆)
Why we love it: slouchy but still looks put together, solid weight so it’s perf for a chilly day, super cozy
